Docs/Mobile App

Mobile App

Modality is a single mobile app with two faces. Open it as an attendee and it lands on Discovery, a social map of events near you. Sign in as a host and it unlocks Studio, the operator mode where you run the door, sell at the box office, and reach your people, all from your phone. This guide covers installing the app and the operator features that matter most on event day.

One App, Two Modes

There is one Modality app, not a separate "organizer" download. Which surface you see is decided automatically from your account:

  • Discovery (default), the consumer surface. A map and feed of events near you, event pages, RSVPs, tickets you hold, DMs, and your profile. Everyone starts here.
  • Studio, the operator surface. A workspace dashboard, check-in, box-office sales, records (People and custom objects), campaigns, and automations. It appears once you're hosting.

A workspace is created for every account, so simply having one doesn't make you an operator. The app checks whether you've actually started hosting; until then it stays in Discovery. When you tap Start hosting (onboarding your workspace), the app flips into Studio instantly. Operators can switch back to Discovery any time, and the app remembers your choice per device. If the app is briefly offline, it never strips your operator surface, it falls back to your last known state and re-checks when you reopen it.

The tab bar changes with the mode

  • Discovery tabs, Discover (the map), Tickets, and Settings, with Feed, Alerts, and a "You" profile reachable inside the Discover stack.
  • Studio tabs, Home (operator dashboard), Records, Engage, Automate, and More. Check-in opens from the Home dashboard's quick actions and event cards.

Installing the App

The app is built for iPhone and iPad (with an Android build as well). There are two ways to get it, depending on whether you're on the public release or the beta.

From the App Store (public release)

  1. 1

    Search the App Store

Open the App Store on your iPhone or iPad and search for Modality, then tap Get to install.

  2. 2

    Open and sign in

Launch the app and sign in, you can Continue with Apple, continue with Google, or use email and password. The same login works on web and mobile.

  3. 3

    Browse, or start hosting

You land on the Discovery map. To operate an event, tap Start hosting (or sign in with an account that already hosts) to switch into Studio.

From TestFlight (beta builds)

  1. 1

    Install TestFlight

Install Apple's free TestFlight app from the App Store.

  2. 2

    Accept your invite

Open the TestFlight invitation link we send you (or redeem the code) to join the Modality beta.

  3. 3

    Install & update

Tap Install in TestFlight. Beta builds refresh often, so check back in TestFlight for updates to get the latest features and fixes.

TestFlight builds are pre-release and expire after a set period; the App Store release is the stable channel. Both connect to the same live workspace and data, installing the beta doesn't create a separate account.

Permissions the app asks for

The app only requests a permission when a feature needs it, and explains why at the moment it asks:

  • Camera, to scan ticket QR codes at check-in and to capture photos/video for posts.
  • Location, to open the Discovery map where you are (and, for door sales, to accept in-person card payments). Your location stays on your device and is never shared with other attendees.
  • Notifications, for RSVP, order, and event alerts.
  • Contacts & Calendar, optional, to text invites through Messages and add events you're going to your calendar.

Discovery Mode

Discovery is the default consumer experience and where every session begins. It centers on a live map of events happening around you, with a matching list and feed.

  • Map & list, browse events near you; tap a pin or card to open the full event page.
  • Event pages, see details, RSVP, buy tickets, and (for events that have them) join the event channel and wall.
  • Tickets, the Tickets tab holds the passes you've bought, with QR codes for entry.
  • Social, a feed, direct messages, and your profile round out the consumer surface.

Your own public events with a location surface here for attendees to find, so Discovery is both how guests browse and how your listings get discovered. See Events & Ticketing for how visibility controls what appears on the map.

Studio Mode (Operators)

Studio is Modality's operator surface, your workspace in your pocket. The Home tab is a dashboard that leads with live numbers and puts event-day tools one tap away.

  • Stat tiles, Revenue, Tickets sold, Live events, People, and Campaigns; tap through to the orders, tickets, events, and people behind each number.
  • Event cards, your upcoming and past events, each with a prominent Check-in action (highlighted for today's events).
  • Quick actions, jump straight to Channels, Records, Engage, Requests, Automate, and Check-in.

The other Studio tabs mirror the web app: Records (People and your custom objects), Engage (campaigns and journeys), and Automate (automation builder). This guide focuses on the three operator features you'll reach for most on the ground.

RSVP & Ticket Door Check-In

The mobile app turns any phone into a door scanner. From the Check-in tab (or the Check-in button on a Studio event card) you pick an event and open the camera scanner. It reads both ticket QR codes and approved-RSVP QR codes, so ticketed and RSVP-only events share one door workflow.

  1. 1

Open Check-in and pick the event

Tap the Check-in tab (or an event's Check-in button on Home) and choose the event you're working.

  2. 2

    Scan the guest's QR

Point the camera at the ticket or RSVP QR. A valid scan marks the ticket USED (or checks the RSVP guest in) and shows a green confirmation with the holder's name.

  3. 3

    Trust the running count

The scanner keeps a live checked-in count for the session. A re-scan of the same code reports "already redeemed" instead of double-counting, and invalid or cancelled tickets show a clear error.

  4. 4

Fall back to the guest list

Can't scan a code? Open Attendees to look someone up and check them in by hand, and use Guest requests to approve or decline pending RSVPs on the spot.

Redemption is server-verified and idempotent per scan, so it's safe to retry, the same code can never be counted twice, even across multiple staff phones or a flaky connection.

Sell at the Door (Box-Office POS)

Every event's check-in flow includes Sell at Door, a full box office. Pick ticket types and quantities (per-showing scope, required-base floors, and dynamic pricing all apply just like online), collect the buyer's details, choose a tender, and the ticket is minted on the spot and stamped as a POS sale.

Supported tenders

  • Tap to Pay, accept a contactless card or Apple Pay directly on a supported iPhone, no extra hardware.
  • Cash, record a cash sale collected at the door.
  • Manual card, key in a card by hand, no reader needed.
  • Card reader, charge on a connected Stripe card reader (same card-present rail as Tap to Pay).
  • External card, record a card taken outside the app.
  • Comp, a free / complimentary ticket ($0 charged).

Card-present charges (Tap to Pay, card reader, manual card) are confirmed with Stripe before the ticket is minted, and capacity is released automatically if a payment doesn't go through. After a sale you can send the buyer an emailed receipt.

Tap to Pay on iPhone is iPhone-only and requires Apple's contactless-payment entitlement, which is granted per developer account and rolled out gradually. On builds where it isn't enabled, the Tap to Pay tender simply doesn't appear, cash, manual card, external card, and comp are always available.

On-Device Email Designer

Compose a campaign email from your phone. From the Engage tab, start a campaign and open the email designer, a native block editor that mirrors the web editor's core set, so an email looks the same wherever it's built or opened.

  • Blocks, add and reorder Heading, Text, Image, Button, Divider, Spacer, Social, Logo, Video, and Columns blocks.
  • Styling, set fonts, colors (with a swatch palette), and alignment per block, and upload images right from your device.
  • Merge tags, drop in personalization tokens (like a recipient's name) that resolve at send time.

When you save, the app renders the design on the server into the same canonical HTML the web app produces (carrying a document marker so it re-opens as editable blocks). That means zero drift between mobile and web, you can start an email on your phone and finish it on your laptop, or vice versa. See Email Campaigns for the full campaign workflow.

Accounts & Sign-In

The mobile app uses the same account and workspace as the web app. Sign in with Apple, Google, or email and password, whatever you use on the web works on mobile. If you belong to more than one workspace, the app scopes everything (mode, plan, and features) to the active workspace, so switching workspaces re-checks whether you're an operator there.

Subscriptions are managed on the web (there is no in-app purchase). Feature availability on mobile follows your plan just like the web app; Pro/Business-gated Studio features prompt to upgrade rather than failing silently.
